Shadows of the City of Desire
Late at night, in a narrow alley beside the old church's side entrance, ancient runes along the streetlamp poles began lighting up one by one.
Three Templar Knights blocked both ends of the alley, trapping Aurelia between them. One of the knights raised a sacred sigil, sending a faint glow rippling outward. In the distance, near the alley entrance, several pedestrians slowed their steps for a split second, yet none of them noticed anything unusual.
"The Temple can keep you safe. Come with us," the knight said.
Aurelia looked at him, her expression cold.
"I didn't ask you to."
A faint noise came from above.
A black cat leaped down from the fire escape and landed beside her. It arched its back, its crimson eyes fixed on the knights, and let out a low, guttural growl.
All three knights' knees suddenly buckled, their bodies sinking involuntarily. The hand holding the sacred sigil trembled, and a gap opened in their once-impenetrable formation.
Aurelia walked straight between them without slowing down.
"Kael. Let's go."
The black cat followed her, and together they disappeared around the corner.
Behind them, the sacred sigil's glow faded into darkness.
A passerby suddenly came to his senses. He looked down at his feet, which had somehow stopped moving without his realizing it, and stood there in bewilderment.
